If you have ever tried beauty subscription service of any kind or even if you haven’t, you might have heard about Macy’s Beauty Box and GlossyBox. I did more than just hear – I tried them both, just one time for each, and would like to give you my first impression about both.
Macy’s Beauty Box came first, so let me start there. The box that arrived promptly, just a few days after ordering, was on the small side, but I sort of expected that out of $15 per month box with sample size products. I have to mention that while I love everything beauty related, I don’t invest time for shopping or new product research, so boxes full of items to test that arrive to my doorstep are great for me.
I liked how neatly the items were packed in the beautiful box and totally enjoyed opening it, which was before Christmas. I felt like I was giving myself an early gift!
The first thing I noticed was a shiny, twinkling, sparkling Macy’s makeup bag inside. I love how all the products that I received fit inside of it and can be kept separately from others for easy access. My 9 year old daughter also couldn’t keep her eyes from the silver sparkles.

These are 7 items that came in this Macy’s Beauty Box:
- GrandeLips Hydrating Plumper – beautiful gold package, deep burgundy color with sparkles in what looks like a full size. It actually happened to match my nail color at that time for an extra wow factor! And yes, it is definitely hydrating and perfect for New Year’s Eve celebration.
- Makeupdrop – drop shaped silicone makeup applicator that also features glitter inside and feels totally amazing on my face when applying makeup. I knew about those applicators, but haven’t owned one yet!
- Elizabeth Arden Vitamin C Capsules – the little container has about 7 of them and I am looking forward to using them for a week right after the holiday craze will end. My face can definitely use some R&R.
- Girlactik 3-in-1 Lip Sparkle Balm – this product looks full size, like a big pencil. It is very soft though and the tip of the balm broke off as soon as I touched my lips. I can’t really imagine how will I sharpen it without smooshing it. I will also have to get a makeup pencil sharpener that is for thick pencils. Not my favorite product here as it requires extra work and extra tools just to use it.
- Pur Afterglow Highlighter – nice clean product for natural glow of whatever ‘after’ you can think of. I like the package, the color, and the quality of it.
- Paco Rabanne Invictus Legend parfume tester – it’s small, but its fresh scent is mesmerizing. I don’t like sweet perfume, so this one is perfect!
- Carolina Herrera Good Girl perfume tester – a bit sweeter than Paco Rabanne, but I can totally see myself using it to a fancy dinner out and have heads turn my way.
All in all, I liked the box. It is definitely worth my time and my $15. I will be looking forward to another one and definitely a lot more than to GlossyBox.
GlossyBox is another beauty subscription service that delivers monthly boxes for $17.95 per month. It differs from Macy’s Beauty box because it includes full size products and less of them.
The box also came fast, but I had to delay opening it as it came on Christmas Eve, so I waited until a couple of days after Christmas to give myself this gift.
The box looked beautiful, so I sat down under my Christmas tree and enjoyed this little time for myself discovering these:
- Golden Gatsby 3D Faux Mink Lashes – they look good, long, and fancy, but this type of product is one thing that I don’t include in my beauty routine, party or not. I tried fake lashes a few times before, but they seemed so heavy that I couldn’t open my eyes properly and I gave up on them permanently.
- Luxie Precision Blending makeup brush – I love the color and the fact that it’s medium size and can be used eyes, brows, and cheeks, making it very versatile.
- Steve Laurant Beauty Cherry Lip Gloss – small cute container, nice color, but no cherry flavor and brush included, so I used my finger and then had to go wash it. I can’t take it on the go with me, but it’s a nice thing to have at home. I am not sure why I expected cherry flavor.
- Nail Medic Rejuvenator – this is a great product that smells good, is easy to apply even on nails with polish on top, and the bottle looks great on my work desk for easy access. I am applying it a few times per day and love it.
- RealHer Ultimate Glow Getter Cheek Trio – this was a disaster as it came broken in pieces and covered me, my dog, my carpet, and my camera in glow that lasted for days, so instead of going on my cheeks it went to trash, all $38 worth of it. I was angry and sad at the same time. I know it’s not GlossyBox’s fault, but still. I might write them to ask for a replacement and to complain a little.
Besides the last disastrous product, everything else was nice. I also didn’t need the lashes, so it left me with just 3 usable products. This is not enough for a very good review, but I am nice and love giving people and companies another chance.

Both boxes came with coupons, which I love. Macy’s Beauty Box had 15% off any beauty purchase, and GlossyBox had $80 worth coupon for Hello Fresh and $100 deal for Naked Wines. I might just use them all in 2020 to fight my after holidays blues!
Macy’s Beauty Box wins my first impression quite strongly, but I can definitely see an appeal of GlossyBox too.
