It’s always hard to say goodbye to something that has been a part of our lives for a long time, 58 years in the case of Pier 1 Imports. The iconic home goods retailer has been struggling for a while and filed for bankruptcy this February. While it was in the process of closing down some stores, coronavirus hit us, and with that even harder times for retail industry arrived.
While in February the company said they wanted to close 450 stores out of 942, today it is clear that none will survive and all will be liquidated. This comes as a surprise for many people. Some of us had our grandmothers favoring then brand, then our mothers, and then we decorated our first apartments with things from Pier 1 Imports. It’s three generations, if not more, but there will be no future for this tradition.
The process of closing down and liquidation will continue in all states based on official post-pandemic opening guidelines. As stores are allowed to open, there will be huge sales and great deals. While many of us will enjoy that, we will probably shop there with sadness. The company is going down for good and will sell not just its tangible goods, but also intellectual property and online side of business.
The company’s CEO Robert Riesbeck is disappointed about the way things are. It was rather unexpected, but yet who could’ve possibly expected 2020 to be the way it is? He goes to thank their loyal associates, millions of customers, and vendors who have been supporting the company for 58 years.
While it is the end for them, Pier 1 Imports had a good run, and many communities and homes benefitted from Pier 1 being in the neighborhood through the years.
The company was hoping to find a buyer after filing for Chapter 11 and they probably had a good chance for that, but COVID-19 had different plans. Today’s traditional retail establishments have been struggling already, but the virus and resulting business closures took away even the smallest of hopes to persevere and to continue from Pier 1 and from many others.
Pier 1 had its modest beginning in 1962 Forts-Worth, Texas and expanded exponentially over six decades to become the widely loved home goods store in the US. It was even featured on Friends! It sold internationally inspired home décor items, kitchen, and bathroom decorations and supplies.
As of right now the store is still going with internet order fulfillment. They will also hold their traditional Memorial Day 40% off sales.
