Whole Wheat and Peanut Butter Dog Cookies

Whole Wheat and Peanut Butter Dog Cookies

Last time I got my dog some store bought cookies, I glanced at the ingredient list and was mortified. They are full of all sorts of chemicals and preservatives. Some are colored and glazed like human cookies, but it’s all just die and sugar. Oska is not a picky eater, so why not bake her some real cookies with healthy ingredients?

It turns out dog cookies are very simple and are made of just a few ingredients. All of us can make the at home without even visiting grocery store! After watching Oska devour my baking masterpiece I felt very good about taking just a bit of time and feeding my love wholesome food made from scratch instead of some nasty store cookies.

I have even ordered personalized cookie jar for Oska from Personalization Mall in anticipation of those cookies. It came in under a week and looks very nice with her name on it. That makes me happy, because everybody should have their own cookie jar, right?

The cookies turned out so good that I ate a couple of them. No, I am not into dog food, but these are made from flour, oats, and peanut butter, so what’s not to love?

Without further ado, let’s get right to the recipe. This recipe makes about 20 medium sized cookies, which should last for about a week, unless kids will go crazy and feed them all in a couple of days, which is entirely possible.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups of whole wheat flour (I used organic King Arthur brand)
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup of organic rolled oats (can be different fast cooking oats, but not instant)
  • ½ cup of Justin’s organic peanut butter
  • 1 cup of water
  • ¼ cup of organic evaporated milk
  • 2 tablespoons of wheat germ or semolina
  • 1 organic egg for egg wash
  • 1 large organic egg for cookies

To start, preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit and line baking sheet with parchment paper. The cookies don’t rise, so you can pack them in pretty tight.

I used stand mixer with regular whisk, but the recipe I looked at called for ladle attachment. Mine worked just fine, so I don’t think it matters which way you mix the ingredients together.

Adding Peanut Butter

In the mixer bowl put both kinds of flour and ½ of oats. Continue with adding peanut butter. As I was adding it, my dog was standing near and drooling – she is a peanut butter addict for sure. This confirmed that she was going to like what I was baking for her.

Add 2 tablespoons of wheat germ, which I did not find in my local grocery store. Instead of that I used 2 spoons of semolina, which is made of wheat germ as far as I understand. Finally, I added ½ cup of evaporated milk. This is something I don’t have on hand or use in my kitchen. The recipe I followed called for powdered or dry milk, which my grocer had only a huge box of for $15, so I decided to try evaporated milk. I honestly don’t think it makes that much of a difference.

Once all the ingredients are in, turn your mixer on low speed and let it get combined. It looks like small crumbs of flour over peanut butter pieces, so don’t expect smooth mixture just yet. Final ingredients are 1 egg and a cup of water. Once they are added, continue mixing for a while until everything is combined and you see a sticky mass.

Soft Ball of Dough for Dog Cookies

Prepare a heavily floured surface and pour the mixture on it. Continue kneading by hand until you will get a soft ball of dough. It takes just a few minutes. This is it!

Roll the dough

Roll the dough in about ½ inch thickness, dip your cookie cutters in flour and cut as many cookies as you can from the dough.

Cut Cookies

Then take the scraps, knead them together again, roll out, and continue cutting cookies.

Cookies for Oska

Repeat these steps until all the dough is used and you have a full tray of cookies.

Dog Cookies

Last step is to whisk one egg with a tablespoon of water in a cup and smear this egg wash over each cookie. Sprinkle them with oats and place your baking sheet in the oven for an hour.

Cookie Baking

Cookies should be crunchy after an hour and ready to serve as soon as they cool off. My dog definitely loved them and my entire house smelled like peanut butter for a while!
