Malls are closing down due to Corona virus
Corona virus pandemic is beginning to hit close to home and as a response businesses are closing their stores or at least reducing their hours of operations. Those policies are implemented to protect people, but are very detrimental to already suffering and struggling retail industry. Some stores might never reopen after the crisis.
Bloomingdales is offering online service
The virus spreads from person to person via respiratory droplets when an infected person sneezes or coughs. It is recommended to stay away from people at least by 6 feet. The COVID–19 disease causing virus can remain active on surfaces for a few days. The stores that are not closing are stepping up their cleaning and disinfecting game everywhere.
The stores that are still open see no shoppers
According to the latest data, currently in the US there are 3,774 confirmed cases and 70 deaths. The situation is getting increasingly grim and people are not laughing any more.
Malls are eerily quiet
The closures are going to be very costly for many retailers. Abercrombie & Fitch is among the first ones to close and warned that the impact on earnings will be large. The company withdrew its earnings forecast. Many other retailers are following this lead and malls are becoming completely vacant and empty.
Corona virus did make us pause everything
Physical store sales make up about 75% of all income for most retail companies, so closing them down and still paying their employees is a tough bite to swallow.
Bloomingdales is moving its operations online and closing most physical stores until the end of March
As Europe is shutting everything down and leaving just food and medicine stores open, the possibility of the same happening here is becoming more real.
Grocery stores are cleaned empty
Many grocery stores can’t keep up with demand and are beginning to ration some items to fight hording shoppers. They are the only retail businesses that are making money and working like crazy.
Cleaning supply shelves are empty at Walmart
CEOs of Walmart and Target both said that their will offer space for virus testing in the parking lots of their stores if need be. Many other retailers are making similar statements:
Even giants like Walmart can’t restock in time
The biggest retailer in the world is cutting hours. All 24-hour and other locations will be open 6 am to 11 pm. The restocking and cleaning will happen at night.

Prices don’t even matter to shoppers any more
Abercrombie & Fitch
Between March 15 and March 28 all stores outside Asia-Pacific region will be closed. All 850 Hollister stores will be shut down as well. This creates some serious uncertainty about the company’s future, which is why it withdrew its sales forecast. Employees are still receiving full pay during this time.
All stores are shut down March 15-27, online ordering still works; corporate employees are working from home. The shoe retailer is paying full salaries to all employees.
The new megamall is suspending its operations all the way through March and delaying opening new attractions that were scheduled for this month.
Apple and many other retailers are closing their stores for 2 weeks
The electronic retailer closed all the stores outside of China until March 27. The stores in China are being reopened with limited hours. All employees are getting paid despite the closures.
The startup doesn’t have many stores, but it’s shutting down the ones that it does have and not opening new ones for now. Corporate office works remotely and all workers are getting paid.
The men’s retailer is suspending all stores in major cities and leaving its online operations working. This is implemented until at least March 19th.

Columbia operations are moving online as stores are temporarily shutting down

The department store will close some locations and will reduce hours for the ones that remain open for now.
